4040 Bleed Checker
Water-Based
Modified Acrylic-Aliphatic Polyurethane Resin
VOC 30.43 g/L Reg.
Description
Appears milky in solution. Dries to a satin, clear finish.
Usage
Clear
4040 was designed as an inter-coat for application over candy2o to prevent dyes from leaching (“bleeding”) into top-coated colors. 4040 replaces the need to apply a catalyzed urethane clear over candy2o to “lock-down” the dyes. 4040 is recommended for all candy2o applications when any color or non-catalyzed paint material is applied over candy2o.
4040 works to prevent leaching with other types of dye-based colors including solvent-based candy colors.
4040 is recommended for use as an inter-coat clear with all Createx paints. It is durable and highly chemical resistant after curing. Suitable for exterior applications.
Mix Additive
4040 may be mixed with candy2o as a replacement for 4030 Balancing Clear. Compared with 4030, candy2o mixed with 4040 dries quicker and dyes will not bleed, however, colors will not flow and level as well as when 4030 is used as the mixing clear. 4040 is recommended as the mixing clear when making anodized candy colors with 4104 Quicksilver.
When used as a mix additive, less 4040 is added to colors compared to mixing colors with 4030.
Drying Times
Estimated drying and curing times are set at 70 degrees F and 65% or less relative humidity (RH). Allow for extended drying times in colder or humid conditions.
- Re-coat time is approximately 10 – 15 minutes.
- When applying with airbrush, allow 30 minutes after last coat before applying top-coat colors.
- When applying with spray-gun (heavier coats), allow 60 minutes drying after last coat before applying top-coat colors.
Application
Apply straight from the bottle without reduction when applying as inter-coat over candy2o. Adding 4012 or other materials will lessen bleed-blocking ability of 4040.
Optional: When applying over Createx paints other than candy2o, 4040 may be thinned with 4012 5 – 10% per volume.
- Airbrush: 0.5mm ~30 psi
- Spray-gun: 1.2 – 1.3mm ~18 – 25 psi
Apply in 2 – 3 medium coats for pin-hole free coverage. Allow each coat to air dry tack free prior to applying next coat. Excessive build not required for bleed-blocking, only pin-hole free coverage.
4040 may be applied direct to any substrate including plastics without an adhesion promoter. Prepare by scuffing 600 – 800 grit sandpaper or coarse scuff pad. Over untreated metal, wipe first with phosphoric acid.
Scuffing is not required before applying colors over 4040. If scuffing, dry sand only using 800 – 1000 grit sandpaper.
Cleaning
4040 is best rinsed from the airbrush or spray-gun with 4012. Use 4008 Restorer as a rinse for final cleaning.
Pot-Life & Storage
4040 does not have a pot life. Store air-tight in a cool, dry environment away from direct light. Do not let 4040 freeze; it will not return to a liquid after thawing. Best stored in temperatures between 40 – 80 degrees F. If 4040 appears yellow in solution, do not use as it may have cured due to prolonged exposure to open air.
Health & Safety
Use in a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after use. Do not ingest. When spraying or sanding, use a properly-fitting NIOSH approved respirator per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Eye contact: Rinse with clean water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Use in in well ventilated areas and wear a NIOSH approved respirator.
Refer to 4040 SDS for additional information.
